Written content is essential for SEO because Google indexes content. If you have no content, it will be really difficult to increase page views and increase conversions. Great content is what creates value in SEO.

This is why marketers love content.

And while Google has been updating its algorithms over the years to help searchers, one thing remains true: they rank highly relevant, useful, informative, and authoritative posts.

Blogging about your new favorite coffee brand won’t pop up on Google anytime soon…unless that post follows the five steps we’ll outline here….

How do you make an article rank higher on Google?

Here’s how you can update your SEO strategy so you can get a top spot on Google for your next blog post, whether you’re creating a pillar page, an e-book, or a how-to article.

1. Choose a good topic, and have great keywords

This one is the stratagy to article writing format. There are 1.7 billion websites on the Internet.

So if you’re writing content for SEO, you need to be thoughtful when choosing keywords to rank for. You need to pick a specific niche within your domain that you want to own and then the topics for the next blog post.

For example, a keyword like “social media marketing” can be difficult to rank because it is a highly competitive area. This means many marketers (and others) have already written articles trying to rank for this topic.

However, intent-based marketing and social intent data are keywords you can consider. They’ll get enough traffic that you’ll bring potential customers to your site, but not so many posts already written by authoritative bodies (high domain authority) that you’ll never get to the top.

See DA at 91? Domain Authority is a ranking out of 100 of how authoritative your organization is. When trying to compete for a keyword GrowthBar shows you which websites you are competing with.

Once you have your niche, it’s time for keywords. Not all keywords are created equal. The surest way to succeed with SEO is to find high search volume and relatively uncompetitive keywords.

The keywords you choose should both have high search volume and be related to your product offering.

In this case, using a keyword research tool like GrowthBar is very helpful. The best keyword research tools enable you to see keyword search volume and competition and suggest long-tail keywords to give you thousands of keyword ideas.

Once you’ve decided on the keywords you want to rank for based on search volume and competition, you’ll want to weave them into your content. In addition to written content, you should use these:

Page URL: [blog domain]/your-keywords-here

  • Title: Your keywords should basically be your title
  • Meta description: Possess the marked keyword somewhere in the first 100 words of your writing, or update your meta illustration with an SEO plugin on your blog.
  • In your image caption and alt image tag (where appropriate)
  • Throughout the rest of the content where it creates meaning

Hint: One way I like to find valuable keywords is to talk to customers.

Search data is great, but sometimes it can be valuable to find pockets of keyword arbitrage by indulging common queries from potential customers or identifying emerging trends.

Another hint: emerging keywords are a gold mine. If there are new businesses or trends in your industry, jump on them. If you are the first to write about them, there is a very high possibility that you can rank. Even if they don’t appear in keyword tools, use your intuition!

2. Write well and write enough

This is another one stratigy of article writing format. The actual quality of your writing affects your ranking.

Gone are the days of writing a mediocre 500-word article and landing on page one of the Google Search Results Page (SEPR).

So make sure your writing is on par with quality, optimized content:

Conclusion: There are some people who will decide whether to read an article by reading the conclusion first. You want to use the conclusion to summarize the main points of the post to encourage these readers to read your entire article, so be sure to write a conclusion that summarizes the main points taken from the posts.

Introduction: This is one of the first things your readers do (unless they’re those conclusion-jumpers), so make it count! Make it interesting, but also authentic: they want to find out as soon as possible if your page will provide the answer they’re looking for.

The right length: In most search verticals, long-form content ranks better, so make sure yours is longer (at least in the 1,000-word range). That’s why GrowthBar has a word count feature that lets you instantly see how long a webpage is.

Keywords: Although John Muller (Head of Webmaster Trends @ Google) says that keyword density doesn’t matter – it does to some degree. Google’s crawlers want to see your target keywords and other semantically similar keywords in your content. You don’t have to go overboard, but you do need to include relevant keywords early and often.

Appropriate wording: High quality means not using big words and jargon. You can write great posts without alienating an audience with no specific background or experience. Write the dialogue in the first person. They should be action-oriented and concise and make sure to keep it readable with varied sentence structure, short paragraphs, and good formatting.

FYI: Article length isn’t arbitrary: Google isn’t just doing it to exploit you.

Length helps content writers like you provide searchers with everything they’re looking for, and that’s how you get top SERP rankings. So when OG bloggers ask, “Why are blog posts so long these days?” For this! Note that content length varies by industry.

The best tools like GrowthBar can tell you how long your post should be for your specific search term, what keywords to include, headline and image count, and more. Cool, right?

3. Make it readable

This is another one stratigy of article writing format. Long does not mean long paragraphs. Many people skim articles before diving in, so you should help readers who won’t sit through 2,000 words of dense content.

Some important ways to add formatting to your blog articles:

Make sure each section has clear headings/key takeaways so the blog post is easy to skim.

  • Break paragraphs into smaller paragraphs. Each should contain no more than 4 sentences.
  • Change sentence length. Blog posts that have a mix of long and short sentences are easier to read. It keeps users scrolling!
  • Use bullets, numbered lists, and bolding for emphasis
  • Add photos, infographics, flats, and diagrams to display more complex points (or just for fun).
  • Make sure it looks good on mobile! Google mainly uses mobile-first indexing — meaning if your mobile site looks terrible, even incredible content won’t rank.

GrowthBar’s content audit tool enables you to optimize your content using hundreds of elements.

4. Links are very important

This is another one stratigy of article writing format. Some important links to focus on when writing a blog post are:

Links to Credible Sources: I have found time and time again that our top-performing articles have external links to highly authoritative sources in the first few paragraphs of the article.

If you’re writing medical content or attempting to improve SEO for doctors, connect to Mayo Clinic or university studies. It displays to Google that you care about quality first and foremost

Internal Links: Internal linking is one of the most important things you can do to rank in search engines.

More internal links equal higher ranking in SERP (Search Engine Results Page).

Each blog post should include at least 2-3 links to other pages on the blog or main site.

Of course, fit as many as fit, but make sure your anchor texts are representative This means you don’t want to link the term “top SEO marketing agency” to an article that’s really about rank tracker tools.

Also, make sure you go back to old posts on your site and link back to new posts you just wrote This helps visitors find new posts and gives your post a boost in search engines

5. URLs are important

This is another one stratigy of article writing format. URL: Yes your URL structure is important for SEO.

Stuff your keywords (reasonably) into the article URL.

For example, in our article about the best marketing agency and freelancer tools, it is much better to create a product URL “/best-marketing-agency-freelancer-tools/” than “/marketing agency”. It’s simple, but it’s important.

Additionally, avoid adding various elements to your URL. For example, this post is about the five steps you should take to get your web pages to rank higher on Google. Ideally, you’d expect to see the phrase “5-step” in the URL.

But…what if next month I was like: “Wow, I really should have told Growthbar readers about this other amazing sixth step that can help get their articles to the front page?”

Sure, I could change the URL, but then all my internal links would be broken, we’d lose any backlinks to this article from other sites, etc…

It’s easy to lose these replaceable components and save yourself a headache later. This also includes posts with “Top 10 X of 2021” or the year if your URL structure is set up to include the day it was published.

Google likes sites that constantly update their work and dates literally age your blog posts.

6. Optimize the rest of your content

This is another one stratigy of article writing format. While the quality of your content and keywords are incredibly valuable to your marketability and rankings, it’s not recommended to treat post titles, meta titles, and meta descriptions as an afterthought.

These elements help further optimize and maximize your search rank, as well as how readers interact with your page. You should have your keywords in your post title, meta marker, and meta report. The title of the post is pretty self-explanatory, and then we have:

Meta Title Tag: The title of your post that will pop up in search engines

Meta Description: The description of your post that pops up in search engines

article writing format

Conclusion

Following these steps will definitely help you write an article that will rank higher in Google. But we’d be remiss to point out that SEO doesn’t happen in the vacuum of a post.

SEO works together with many other elements of your site. It’s important that you consider the technical elements of your site, link building, and other authority-building best practices.
