The alt and title attributes of an image are commonly referred to as ‘Alt tags’ or ‘Alt text’ and ‘title tags’. (Technically they’re not tags, they’re features, but you don’t have to worry about it). These features allow you to add text descriptions to your images, which can help with both SEO and accessibility.

The Alt tag is used by screen readers, which is used by people with visual impairments such as browsers. These screen readers tell them that what is in the picture reads the alt tag. Although it’s not just screen readers who read Alt text. Search engines like Google also use this information to understand the context of the image; To find out what an image shows and what its purpose is.

Each image should have an alternate text. Not just for SEO purposes, but for accessibility. Because people who use screen readers will not know about the image otherwise.

The title feature is shown as a tooltip when you hover over the element. A title attribute is not required. What’s more, most of the time it doesn’t even make sense to add it. These are only available to people who use a mouse (or another pointing device) and only in the case where the title feature is required for accessibility is on <iframe> and <frame> tags.

If the information provided by the title attribute is relevant, consider making it available elsewhere, in plain text. And if that’s not relevant, consider removing the title attribute altogether.


But what if a photo doesn’t have a purpose?

If your design contains images that are only for design reasons, then you are wrong. Those images should be in your CSS and not in your HTML If you really can’t do anything about these images being there, give them a blank Alt attribute, such as:

Google’s article about the image is titled “Use descriptive alt text”. This is not a coincidence. Google maintains a relatively high standard of alt text. They use it to determine what is in the image and how it relates to the surrounding text. For this reason, in our Yoast SEO content analysis, we have a feature that specifically checks that you have at least one image with an alt tag so that your focus is keyphrase.

How does Yoast check ‘keyphrase on image alt attribute’ in SEO?

The keywords in the image alt attribute assessment in Yoast SEO include two checks: a) whether your post has images and b) whether the image has an alt text with a focus keyphrase. First, you should always consider adding images to your posts and pages, as these will make your content more descriptive and interesting. But by adding alt text to your image, you provide screen readers and search engine users with a textual description of what’s in that image. This improves accessibility and if you include your keywords, image search also gives you a chance to rank.

We are not saying that your focus keyphrase should be spammed on every Alt tag. You need good, high-quality, relevant images for your posts, where it is understandable to have focus keywords in the alt text.

When choosing alt text, focus on creating useful, informative content that uses keywords correctly and in terms of page content. Avoid filling in Alt attributes with keywords (keyword stuffing) as this can lead to a negative user experience and show your site as spam.

If your image belongs to a specific product, include both the full product name and the product ID in the alt tag to make it easier to find. In general: If a keyphrase can be useful for finding something in an image, include it in the alt tag if you can. Also, be sure to rename the image file to describe what it contains.

If your content contains more than 4 images, you will only receive a green bullet if the percentage of images with key phrases in the Alt text falls between 30 and 70%. When you use the original phrase in more than 70% of your pictures, your bullet will turn orange to prevent you from keyword stuffing. If you have Yoast SEO Premium or Yoast SEO for Shopify, the plugin will also consider synonyms added to your keyphrase.
